Topic: Starting my journey...
Hi All,
Like many of you, I've been overweight all of my life. And, like many males, I had always been able to drop 20 or more pounds whenever I wanted to. However, at nearly 47 I can't do it any more. In addition to weighing more than 300 pounds, I have high blood pressure(taking Lopressor & HCTZ), painful arthritis in my knees (Synvisc injections & Celebrex), pre-diabetic (metformin), and generally feel like crap most of the time. I have no energy and have little or no desire to take part in any of what used to be my favorite activities (golf, softball, camping, attending sporting events, etc).
So, today I took the first steps. I called my insurance carrier to get their criteria for them to cover WLS. It looks like I meet all of them: BMI > 40, Co-Morbidity, Previous non-surgical weight loss, documented obesity > 5 years. The representative also said that there is no mandatory waiting period. However, I'm well aware that it may take several months for approval.
I have an appointment to see my PCP next month get get things moving from that point. My doctor is also a very good friend since we were in 1st grade together. He knows my life-long struggle with weight and weight loss. Infact, he first mentioned WLS to me 3 years ago. I feel confident that he will be all for my decision to pursue WLS now.
I'll let you all know how things go. Thank you in advance for your support!
Take care,
Jim

Thanks to all of you for your warm welcome. I have been low carb and high protien for over a month now. I have lost 10 lbs. Giving up beer and soda has been hard, as is the comfort foods I grew up with but I am doing this for my health and myself so it is worth it. Thanks again, and good luck to us all.

Surgery went well and am home now. Getting a little better each day not to much pain. Having a hard time drinking the protein drinks they taste yucky to me. The only way I can handle them is to add them to something else like V-8 diet splash or pudding. Any one have any suggestions as to any other way I might drink them. I would like to say that the staff at the CAMC W&C hospital was a very big help to me I don't think I could have done it without them. And I appreciate the two women who checked on me while in the hospital thank you all.

Hey girl! So glad you are back home and doing well! And YES! Dr. Shin is WONDERFUL! I tried to call the charge nurse and check on you and they wouldn't give me any updates :( Said I needed a code. I was going to have them put the call through to your room, but didn't want to bother you after seeing that there was already an after surgery update.
I hope they treated you well there. I absolutely loved them. Those nurses are the best I tell ya!
Anways, take care sweetie and hopefully the pain will be gone soon! *Hugs*
